Conference on “How Global Trade can Promote Growth for All” Held in Indonesia

In October 10, 2018, the WTO, IMF, WB and OECD held the conference on “How Global Trade can Promote Growth for All” in Bali, Indonesia. The WTO Director-General Azevêdo, IMF President Lagarde, WB President Jim Yong Kim, and OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría attended the conference. The meeting called for a joint boycott of protectionism and the continuous promotion of trade liberalization. Vice Minister of Commerce Qian Keming attended the meeting on behalf of Minister Zhong Shan and was invited to deliver a speech as a guest in the fourth part.

Qian Keming said that the current unilateralism and protectionism are intensifying and severely impacting the global trade order. It is imperative to firmly uphold the multilateral trading system and take a clear cut stand to oppose unilateralism and protectionism. China has always abided by the rules of the WTO, promote reform and opening up, continue to open its doors for construction, and support the multilateral trading system with practical actions.

Qian Keming pointed out that all sides should take actions to safeguard the authority and effectiveness of the WTO, resolve concerns through consultation within the WTO framework, and promote the WTO to continue to play a greater role in global economic governance. China recognizes that it is necessary for the WTO to have reform. The reform must first address the issues that threaten the survival of the WTO, including unilateralism, protectionism, and the selection of members of the appellate body. The key to success in any negotiation is openness, balance and tolerance.

WTO Director-General Azevêdo, the former President of the Appellate Body Bacc‎hus and India’s Ambassador to the WTO Deepak and senior officials from Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade attended the 4th part of discussion.
